VivaTango Newsletter for April 20th

Hello Tango Dancers. Princeton comes to life every year in the Spring. VivaTango is celebrating the dancers who are returning to Thursday Tango’s milongas.

This Thursday’s milonga will be hosted by Meredith Klein and Andres Amarilla. Prior to the milonga you will have a chance to learn about “Sacada sequences that help you develop fluidity and elasticity to benefit your whole dance.

Thursday April 27th will feature live music by Winnie Cheung’s Duo. Kerry Kay will DJ between live sets.

Details of these events are described below. Take special note of your second opportunity to dance to live tango music this month.

At VivaTango – You Will Dance!

Thursday April 13th Milonga will feature Pablo Garcia Gomez & Iwona Ionescu who will teach a lesson titled “From Parada to Parada: building sequences with less usual paradas” Pablo and Iwona are the instructors for the Princeton Adult School Tango classes, and they are popular instructors at VivaTango and other tango events. DimOn the TangoDJ will play for the Milonga that will follow the lesson. All levels lesson starts at 7:00,

April 6 2023

April will be filled with Live Tango Music at VivaTango. April 6th will feature live music by Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom, plus Meredith Klein will DJ between live sets of the milonga. See this video of Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom at VivaTango last year VIDEO.

April ends with live music by the Winnie Cheung Duo. In between are two great milongas with outstanding DJs and instructors providing all level lessons before the milonga.

Thursday April 6th will feature live music by Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom. Juan is a singer, guitarist and composer; and Patricio is an arranger, composer, and guitarist. Juan and Patricio return to VivaTango to kick off their second North American tour. Their 2022 performance at Viva Tango was a great success. Since then, they were featured on the cover of Tangodanza Magazine. Those of you who attended last year will want to dance to their music again, and if you didn’t get to hear them last year, don’t miss hearing them April 6th. Meredith Klein will DJ between the sets of live music. Doors open at 7 PM. $20.

March programing ends with the amazing Eleonora Kalganova who hosts the milonga along with DimOn (aka Dmitri). This will be a fun night. April kicks off with live music on April 6th.  Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom return to VivaTango to provide live music for the milonga. Details of these events are described in this newsletter.

The use of elasticity “. Ines is an internationally recognized Tango instructor known for her focus on technique, musical interpretation, quality of movement and connection. She incorporates elements of traditional and modern Tango in her teaching to give students tools to make their dance grow. Meredith organizes the many Tango events offered by the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, and is an internationally known Tango instructor and dancer. March will be a month of great dancing at VivaTango. It all begins with a milonga featuring Maria Elena Ybarra and Hoi-Shan Leung with DJ DimOn! Milonga will include a performance. There will be a lesson preceding the milonga.

Thursday March 2 Maria Elena Ybarra and Hoi-Shan Leung will host a milonga preceded by a lesson, plus they will do a performance. The lesson is on two styles of milonga dancing, Lisa and Traspié. Maria Elena, originally from Argentina, is a professional Tango dancer, teacher and choreographer based in NYC. As an instructor Maria Elena engages with Tango dancers effectively providing clear instructions and demonstrations of the art of Tango dancing. Her technique comes from having studied traditional Tango for more than twenty years. Hoi-Shan is the Salon Champion of the 2018 Hong Kong Tango Championships. She also teaches at Columbia University and has taught in Seoul and Hong Kong. Lesson starts at 7:00, Milonga at 8:15 and Performance about 9:30. Lesson $15, Milonga $15, Both $20.

VivaTango – February 23

February concludes with an amazing two-part event on February 23rd. Doctora Margarita will be your tour guide on a virtual tour to Buenos Aires that will include time-travel to a milonga in Buenos Aires in 1930 and you will dance to videos of live music by the Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D’Arienzo, Anibal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliese orchestras. This will be followed by a milonga with live music by Maurizio and Melissa right here in Princeton. More details below.

At VivaTango – You Will Dance!

Would you like to dance in the historic Tango dance halls of the 1930s to the live music of the orchestras of Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D’Arienzo, Anibal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliese? Doctora Margarita aka Meg Farrell, VJ extraordinaire, will transport you, via her collection of historic videos from this era, projected on the big screen. With the lights turned down low, and with a little imagination, you will be teleported in time and space to this era. Meg will share her knowledge of the interesting personalities and back stories of these orchestras. Learn what differentiates the music of these orchestras and why they are still the main Tangos played at modern day milongas. This all takes place from 7:00 to 8:15 PM. The event continues with live music from Maurizio and Merisa. Cost for this video experience and the milonga with live music is $20.

Thursday February 23rd Milonga with Live Music by Maurizio Najt and Melisa Atoyan. The milonga will be preceded by dancing with the great Tango orchestras presented by Doctora Margarita aka Meg Farrell. Meg will bring the great Tango orchestras to our dance floor via video and share interesting back stories about them and then you will dance to their original music. Meg will also DJ between live music sets during the milonga. Cost $20. Doors open at 7 PM. Tango to the great orchestras from 7:00 to 8:15.  Milonga with live music begins at 8:15.

VivaTango is located at 45 Stockton Street, Princeton New Jersey. We have an off-street parking lot at the venue. The dance floor is in the smaller of the two buildings. We are also easily accessed by rail from NYC or Philly. Just get a ticket to Princeton (not Princeton Junction). You get off the train at Princeton Junction and take a shuttle train to Princeton. The venue is 8 blocks from the Princeton Train Station (0.8 mi.).

VivaTango continues to need help at the end of events to store chairs, tables, lights, and sound system. This task requires staying about 30 minutes after the end. You will be part of a team of 3 persons. This is a great way to get to know some of your fellow dancers. If interested contact Sylvie

VivaTango – February 16

VivaTango is organizing a tour to Buenos Aires that will include virtual travel and entrance to a milonga. The milonga takes place on a Thursday in 1930 and you will dance to videos of live music by Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D’Arienzo, Anibal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliese orchestras. Thursday February 16th Milonga will feature the Guest Tango Team of Gabriel Gaumond & Catrinel Iftode who will teach and perform. Their lesson topic is “Sacadas vs Barridas vs Enganche ! If you do not know the difference you will after this lesson. Gabrial and Ca Ti are based in Washington DC and have a dance style that has been characterized as romantic. Gabriel’s is known for his teaching of musical interpretation using the body as a medium for expression, and the mechanics of connection. Ca Ti seeks to help dancers feel confident, empowered and comfortable in their dance. They will teach an all-levels lesson starting at 7:00, the Milonga starts at 8:15 and the performance at 9:30. Would you like to dance in the historic Tango dance halls of the 1930s to the live music of the orchestras of Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D’Arienzo, Anibal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliese? Doctora Margarita aka Meg Farrell, VJ extraordinaire, will transport you, via her collection of historic videos from this era, projected on the big screen. With the lights turned down low, and with a little imagination, you will be teleported in time and space to this era. Meg will share her knowledge of the interesting personalities and back stories of these orchestras. Learn what differentiates the music of these orchestras and why they are still the main Tangos played at modern day milongas. This all takes place from 7:00 to 8:15 PM, before the live music from Maurizio and Merisa begins. Cost for this video experience and the milonga with live music is $20. EVENT LINK

Thursday February 23rd Milonga with Live Music by Maurizio Najt and Melisa Atoyan. The milonga will be preceded by dancing with the great Tango orchestras presented by Doctora Margarita aka Meg Farrell. Meg will bring the great Tango orchestras to our dance floor via video and share interesting back stories about them and then you will dance to their original music. Don’t miss this unique experience. Meg will also DJ between live music sets during the milonga. Cost $20. Doors open at 7 PM. SAFETY

We remind dancers that they should not come if they have any symptoms or have been exposed to people who have Covid. Masks are recommended, but optional.

WATER

We urge dancers to bring their water bottle from home to cut down on single use bottles. There is also a chilled water fountain next to the bathroom to refill your water bottles with chilled water and a cold/hot water dispenser in the entry way to help keep you hydrated.
