Wrong Way Corrigan

You don’t want to be a Wrong Way Corrigan on the dance floor. He was an aviator who filed a flight plan to go from New York to California and somehow wound up in Ireland.  That’s why we’ve got Lesley Mitchell to teach 180 degree turns Thursday night. These come in handy when you’re hoping to get to Sacramento and start to spy Dublin on the horizon. We’ll start at 8. $12 admission, $10 for students with ID.

There’s one very good photo this week (that’s slightly better than our usual ratio) – the class picture of our Beyond the Basics Boot Camp. We’re very proud of them. They worked hard and really mastered the material.

January 3 – 6, 2013

Hard to believe but Our Funny Valentine Milonga is just a little over a month away.  If you can suggest a better name than that or a name worse than all of last year’s rejects, speak up. We’ll use it.

Hut, two, three, four! Oh, all right, you won’t have to march in formation or present arms. But you will learn to do a complete 180 degree turn on the dance floor without provoking an international incident.  A woman who knows secret maneuvers you haven’t even dreamed of,  Lesley Mitchell will be your guide (or your Drill Sergeant if you prefer.)  Lesley will spend the next three weeks making non-combatants of us all when it comes to facing that oncoming horde of dancers when we’re going the wrong way. As you can see from last week’s pictures, that happens.

Join us at SPC for the lesson at 8 tonight. $12 admission, $10 for students with ID.

Our Tango Bootcamp – Beyond the Basics is this weekend, January 5th and 6th.  Last chance to register for the lower price.

Picture postcard endings at 8

argentine tangosmallYes, just like the ones you’ve seen on every postcard you’ve ever sent or received from Buenos Aires.  But here’s the incredible thing – real people do them too.  And we’ve got Kelly Ray tonight to teach you how. A spiritual Porteño and a brilliant de-constructor, Kelly has seen them all, knows them all and can teach them all.  This should be amazing fun.

Join us tonight at 8 o’clock (note the earlier start time) at the Suzanne Patterson Center. Admission $12, $10 for students with ID.

If you’re working on that list of New Year’s Resolutions, here’s one you want to include; Perfect your tango. And here’s how; Our Boot Camp – Beyond the Basics takes place next week on the weekend of January 5th and 6th.  If your basic skills need some polishing, if your leading/following technique needs some refining, if your giros, molinetes or ocho cortados could be better, this is for you. If you are a woman who wants to learn to lead or a man who wants to learn to follow, this is for you. Register now to get the lower price.

We’re alive and kicking and more good news

If you’re reading this, we guess the Mayans didn’t get you either. Hmmm. We’re all alive and kicking.  We’re all in a holiday mood.  We’re all in party mode. Clearly, there’s only one thing to do – keep on partying with the kickin’ program we have planned for this Thursday December 27th.  Kelly Ray will be demonstrating his technique for capping your tangos with those big, dramatic, picture perfect endings.

If you can’t parlay that into romance by New Year’s Eve, you might want to double check that alive and kicking function.

The yoga class which preceded us at the Suzanne Patterson Center has gone on hiatus for a year.  Our start time moves back to 8 o’clock and will stay there.

Thanks to all of you who came out for our Holiday Milonga.  We had a really fabulous time.  Join us at 8 on Thursday to continue partying while the holidays are still upon us.  We promise it will be a kick.

All of us at Viva wish you and yours the very merriest, holliest, jolliest, kickin’ Christmas ever.

Holiday Party Milonga starts at 8:30 Tonight

We’ve got some surprises for you, definitely the best end-of-the-world gifts you’ll ever receive. And Nelly’s doing the food.  We think that makes for a perfect evening.  So show your holiday spirit.  Come to the Suzanne Patterson Center and tango like there’s no tomorrow.

The end is near

The end is near for many things – the year, the mad shopping marathon, your mother-in-law’s annual visit, possibly even the world, and our sequence of lessons on turns.

Join us at 9:15 tonight when Marcelo ‘ChuLo’ Manfredi and Michelle Dougherty wrap up with the most critical turns of all – when you have no space on a crowded dance floor. That’s at SPC. Admission $12 or $10 for students with ID.

We can’t do anything about the end of the year or your mother in law, but we can certainly help with the shopping.  Viva has gift certificates available for our Tango Boot Camp; Beyond the Basics.

As for that end of the world thing, we have plans for that. Next Thursday, December 20th, is our Holiday Party Milonga. It’s going to be the (possibly) last, (definitely) best party evah. You really can’t sit home watching reruns of the Grinch while that’s going on.

Hang on, we’ve got something for every verse because Fast away the old year passes.

Follow me in merry measure: That’s what you’ll do when you join us Thursday at 9:15 for ChuLo and Michelle’s wrap up of tango turns.

Don we now our gay apparel: That’s for our Holiday Party Milonga on December 20th when we’ll be photographing your best tango poses for your scrapbook and ours.

Hail the new, ye lads and lasses: Our Boot Camp-Beyond the Basics, on January 5th and 6th is for those (relatively) new to tango or those who want to be new again.

While I tell of Yuletide treasure: Did you know we have gift certificates available for our Holiday Milonga, our Tango Boot Camp or pretty much anything else to ease your holiday shopping and thrill the tangueros on your list?

Tis the season to be jolly, so please Deck the halls with boughs of holly and Troll the ancient Yuletide carol – Fa la la la la la, la la la la.

ChuloMichellecropped Join us at SPC tonight at 9:15 when Marcelo ‘ChuLo’ Manfredi and Michelle Dougherty present Turns-Part Deux. You’ll learn how to enter, exit and combine turns in nice flowing combinations. Admission is $12 or $10 for students with ID. (Note the price change for students.)

While we’re working our way down the to-deux list, here are a couple of others for you: Viva Tango’s second annual Holiday Party Milonga is December 20th. We promise the sequel, part deux, will be even better than the original.

Our second Tango Boot Camp – Beyond the Basics takes place the weekend of January 5th and 6th. If you’ve taken basic lessons and you’re ready to tackle giros, molinetes and ocho cortados while making yourself fun to dance with, this is for you. If you need a review of the basics and some polishing of your leading/following technique, this is for you. If you’re a woman who wants to lead or a man who wants to follow, then Boot Camp Part Deux is definitely for you.
