If you want to secure your place on the 2016 Olympic Tango Team, you need to start training immediately. Rio beckons.

Fortunately we’ve got the perfect coach for the tangathlete. ChuLo (whose team won gold at the San Marino Olympics) will be on hand Thursday at 8 to get us started with that all important teamwork.

If you know any tango wannabes who hope to qualify for the Team, please tell them our Beginner Tango Lessons start on August 23. Click the link for complete information.

Here are pictures of the medal ceremonies from last week. By the way, we never name you or geo-tag you in our photos. We wouldn’t want to jeopardize your place in the Witness Protection Program, even if you are an Olympic headliner.

First to ChuLo’s lesson about milonguero sequences for changing direction in tight spots.  That’s at 8 o’clock tonight.

Then listen to the music. ChuLo will be DJing all night. He brings the Porteño’s passion for all things Argentine, a musician’s ear and a dancer’s sensibility to his music selections. He’s on a one man mission to make the level of DJing in these parts as good as it is in Buenos Aires.

Join us from 8 to 11:45 tonight at the Suzanne Patterson Center. $12 admission, $5 for full time students with ID.

Here’s your to-do list for today:

  • SHARPEN UP YOUR BIG TOE.  It will be your pencil for ChuLo’s lesson in lapizes tonight. That’s at 8.
  • WEAR YOUR GLASSES.  You’ll want to get a really good look at ChuLo  and Michelle’s  performance. That’s at 10:30
  • LISTEN UP.  ChuLo will be DJing. That’s all night.
  • DRESS TO IMPRESS.  There will be photographers.

  • PASS THIS EMAIL ON.  Viva announces Beginner Tango Lessons starting August 23. Your non-tangoing friends will want to know.

We’re that high falutin’. It could have been Sunderland or Tangoblivion or any number of other places but it’s going to be Viva.

We are proud and pleased to announce that Marcelo “ChuLo” Manfredi and his beautiful new dance partner, Michelle Dougherty, will give their world première dance performance Thursday night at 10:30 at Viva.


That’s the highlight but there’s more.  ChuLo will give a lesson at 8 in lapizes and he’ll be DJing all evening. There’s also our seriously good floor and our seriously good air conditioning.

Set your DVR’s now. You can save that Rowing Event to watch some night when there’s no tango.

The tango numbering system stops at 8. Well, OK, there are Nueve Puntos but that’s a song, not a dance step. For dance steps we’ve only got ochos and the creative ways Vittoria and Guillermo can find to get into and out of them. They’ll be doing more of that this Thursday at 8.

Otherwise those pictures are always going to be blurry. So here’s what we want you to do; Take three tango steps, pause for the photo op. Three tango steps, pauuuuuse for the photo op. You know how important pauses are in tango. Now you know the reason for it.

Deserves another, of course. Vittoria and Guillermo have just that in mind for tonight’s lesson – how to go from an apparently simple ocho into a molinete (or giro.) This will turn your head and hopefully your feet, too
