Magic happens every Thursday at VivaTango in Princeton! Thursday September guest instructors Martin Maldonado & Maurizio Ghella provided that magic with an outstanding lesson and a performance with two encores.

Dance to live music and Celebrate with us! September ends with live music by the Abaddon Quartet on September 28th. Headlining the live music are Shinjoo Cho, bandoneon; Sergio Reyes, violin; Emilio Teubal, piano; and Pablo Lanouguere, double bass. DJ DimOn will be master of this Celebration Milonga. This celebration marks the 12th anniversary of VivaTango Princeton. Please share the news of this event with your tango events and invite them to join you.

October will be filled with milongas you do not want to miss. Highlights include live music at two milongas, one of the world’s best DJs, a national Tango champion, and a performance.

Thursday September 28th The Abaddon Quartet will fill the dance floor with live music. This quartet explores the vast repertoire of vibrant and passionate music from Buenos Aires, infusing it with new vitality while respecting the essence of its traditions. Shinjoo Cho, bandoneon; Sergio Reyes, violin; Emilio Teubal, piano; and Pablo Lanouguere, double bass. DJ DimOn will be playing your favorite tandas during the breaks. Milonga starts at 7 PM with DJ. Live music starts at 8:30. $20EVENT LINK

Thursday October 5th the Milonga will be hosted by Helen Wang. There will be a lesson before the milona, and a performance. All levels lesson starts at 7:00, Milonga at 8:15. Lesson $15, Milonga $15, Both $20.

Thursday October 12th Celebrate 25 Years of Thursday Tango in Princeton with Lesson by Octavio Fernandez and Meredith Klein; and live music by Emiliano Messiez and Horacio Romo; and Milonga hosted by DJ Octavio Fernandez. Octavio was headliner for this year’s Phalidelphia Tango Festival and is in high demand as instructor and DJ at international festivals. Meredith Klein is the organizer of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School and teaches and performs internationally at many festivals. Horacio Romo is one of the best living bandoneonists. He has won one Grammy and two Gardel awards. He has played solo on the best stages of the world and has played with orchestras such as the Orquesta Color Tango, with which he performed around the world for 9 years, the Fernando Suárez Paz Quintet, the Astor Piazzolla Foundation Quintet, the Leopoldo Federico Orchestra, the National Tango Selection, and many others. He is the musical director and first bandoneon of the company Forever Tango, a show with the same name that tours the world. Emiliano Messiez was the pianist for the Broadway and London show “Forever Tango”, a show that has been seen by more than 8 million people around the world. He has also served as the music director and pianist for the successful shows “Impact” and “Tango Buenos Aires”, and he is the creator of “Barolo Tango,” a live tango show based in Argentina. All levels lesson starts at 7:00, Milonga at 8:15. $20.

We urge dancers to bring their water bottle from home to cut down on single use bottles. There is a chilled water fountain next to the bathroom to refill your water bottles with chilled water and a cold/hot water dispenser in the entry to help keep you hydrated.

VivaTango is located at 45 Stockton Street, Princeton New Jersey. There is a well-lit, off-street parking lot at the venue. The large dance floor is in the smaller of the two buildings. The venue is easily accessed by rail from NYC and Philly. Just get a ticket to Princeton (not Princeton Junction. You get off the train at Princeton Junction and take the connecting shuttle train to Princeton.) The venue is 8 blocks from the Princeton Train Station with a lovely walk through the Princeton University Campus (0.8 mi.).

Magic happens every Thursday night at VivaTango Events. Thursday September 21st Martin Maldonado & Maurizio Ghella will teach and perform. Martin and Maurizio are both from Argentina and currently live and work in Vienna, Austria. They studied Tango in Buenos Aires with the original milongueros. They bring the tradition and culture of authentic Argentine tango to the world through their teaching and performances on many world stages and festivals. They have also been innovative pioneers in interfacing Tango with other art forms, and also in making Tango more inclusive of peoples with different abilities. This Thursday Pablo and Iwona will teach a lesson entitled “Taking off with barridas, flying with colgadas: Unique barridas and colgadas combinations”. After the lesson Pablo and Iwona will be available at the side of the dance floor to help any dancers wishing more help with the lesson.  Kerry Kay will DJ for the milonga. Beginner Tango Series: Tuesday October 17 will begin a 6-week beginner series, which is a great way to master Tango fundamentals. It begins with the basic skills and builds each week to cover the skills needed to dance socially. The series is run through the Princeton Adult School and is taught by Pablo and Iwona. Classes meet Tuesday evenings 7:30 to 9:00 in Susan Patterson Center (the same dance floor used by VivaTango on Thursdays). For more information on how to register click HERE.

Thursday September 14th will feature a milonga hosted by Pablo Garcia Gomez & Iwona Ionescu. Pablo and Iwona are the instructors for the Princeton Adult School Tango classes, and they are popular instructors at VivaTango and other tango events. Their lesson this week is “Taking off with barridas, flying with colgadas: Unique barridas and colgadas combinations”. After the lesson Pablo and Iwona will be available at the side of the dance floor to help any dancers wishing more help with the lesson.  Kerry Kay will DJ for the milonga, playing her great tanda selection. There is always some magic that happens every Thursday night at VivaTango Events. Eleonora made that magic recently and Sophie June captured it on video. September starts off with a milonga, lesson and performance by the stars of the international traveling tango show “Tango Fire” and ends with live music by a great quartet, with a National Champion, performance and more between. Keep reading for the details.

Thursday September 7th will feature Luciano Capparelli and Rocío de los Santos, stars of the international Tango Fire traveling Tango Show. The New York Times review of the TANGO FIRE performance in NYC said “No couple, however, was as beautifully lavish as Luciano Capparelli and Rocío de los Santos. In each of their tangos, tension gave way to voluptuous softness and powerful overhead lifts melted onto the floor in silken extensions. As the title goes, they were on fire.”  Between 2006 and 2013, they taught and danced all around the world, traveling with and performing at the “Tango Buenos Aires” show. Their last performance at VivaTango was 5 years ago: VIDEO.  The Guest DJ for this week is Guillermo Elkouss who was an instructor and DJ at the beginning of VivaTango 12 years ago. We welcome Guillermo and his wife Vittoria back to VivaTango. All levels lesson 7:00, Milonga 8:15, Performance 9:30. Lesson $15, Milonga $15, Both $20. EVENT LINK

Sean won the ATUSA Stage Tango category and represented the US at the Tango Mundial world championships. Jackie’s passion is for fluid co-creation across all styles of tango. She was a regular DJ at DC’s most popular milongas as well as regional marathons and festivals. Jackie and Sean are the current instructors for the Princeton Tango Club. Lesson starts at 7:00. The Milonga will follow the lesson at 8:15. Sean and Suying Jin will perform at 9:30. Suying is a member of the Princeton Tango Club. Lesson $15, Milonga $15 or Both $20.

Our Blue Super-Moon Milonga will be on Thursday August 31. We will celebrate this rare appearance (next blue super-moon is in 9 years) of the blue moon in the sky by having five stars of our own at the milonga. The incredible Los Chantas quartet from NYC will provide live music and Meg Farrell will DJ.

September starts off with a milonga, lesson and performance by the stars of the international traveling tango show “Tango Fire” and ends with live music by a great quartet, with a National Champion and more between. Keep reading for the details.

At VivaTango – You Will Dance!

ABRAZOS

On Thursday August 31st we will celebrate the blue supermoon in the sky. Blue supermoons are rare. The next one will be in 2032. Our Blue Moon Milonga will feature live music by the Los Chantas, who are a multinational tango quartet from New York City composed of Emilio Teubal on piano, Sergio Reyes on violin, David Hodges on bandoneon and Pablo Lanouguere on bass. Four of the best tango musicians. Their repertoire includes original arrangements of songs by Gardel, Troilo, Salgán, Piazzolla, and others performed in a playful, improvised style. Los Chantas infuses classic tangos with new life and unique flavor. The guest DJ for the evening is Meg Farrell, the PhD of Tango Music. Milonga starts at 7 PM with music by Meg and Live music starts at 8:30 PM. $20   EVENT LINK

Kerry Kay’s Father passed away very recently. Many of you are good friends of Kerry and will want to reach out to her during this time. She had planned to DJ on August 17, but will still be with her family in Australia, so Pablo and Iwona will DJ that evening.

Thursday August 17th Pablo Garcia Gomez & Iwona Ionescu will teach a lesson on “Multi-turn sequences”. Pablo and Iwona are the instructors for the Princeton Adult School Tango classes, and they are popular instructors at VivaTango and other tango events All levels lesson starts at 7:00, Milonga at 8:15. Thursday August 24th will feature Eleonora Kalganova. Eleonora is an accomplished instructor and a spontaneous dancer who has danced all over the world. DimOn (aka Dmitri) will DJ the milonga. Eleonora and DimOn will give you a complete evening of wonderful tango. All levels lesson 7:00, Milonga 8:15. Lesson $15, Milonga $15, Both $20.   EVENT LINK

Thursday August 31st will celebrate the blue supermoon in the sky. The Blue Moon Milonga will feature live music by the Los Chantas, who are a multinational tango quartet from New York City composed of Emilio Teubal on piano, Sergio Reyes on violin, David Hodges on bandoneon and Pablo Lanouguere on bass. Four of the best tango musicians. Their repertoire includes original arrangements of songs by Gardel, Troilo, Salgán, Piazzolla, and others performed in a playful, improvised style. Los Chantas infuses classic tangos with new life and unique flavor.  Blue supermoons are rare. The next one is in 2032. Our blue supermoon will rise during the milonga and be high in the sky when you leave. Milonga starts at 7 PM with music by DJ, and Live music starts at 8:30 PM. $20   EVENT LINK

WATER

We urge dancers to bring their water bottle from home to cut down on single use bottles. There is a chilled water fountain next to the bathroom to refill your water bottles with chilled water and a cold/hot water dispenser in the entry to help keep you hydrated.

DIRECTIONS

VivaTango is located at 45 Stockton Street, Princeton New Jersey. There is a well-lit, off-street parking lot at the venue. The large dance floor is in the smaller of the two buildings. The venue is easily accessed by rail from NYC and Philly. Just get a ticket to Princeton (not Princeton Junction. You get off the train at Princeton Junction and take the connecting shuttle train to Princeton.) The venue is 8 blocks from the Princeton Train Station with a lovely walk through the Princeton University Campus (0.8 mi.).

Helen Wang and James will lead off the events for August. They will host a milona and teach a lesson on leg wraps. Each Thursday the dance floor is full and the chairs are empty. There is a lot of dancing going on. See photos from last week HERE. The leader/follower ratio is close to even – the last two weeks had a few more leaders than followers. Come dance with us.

Thursday July 20th will feature Ignacio Santiago, aSpecial Guest Instructor from Buenos Aries. Ignacio will teach with Meredith Klein and host the milonga. Don’t miss this special event. Ignacio will DJ for the milonga playing tandas with 3 songs this month. All levels lesson starts at 7:00, Milonga at 8:15, Lesson $15, Milonga $15, Both $20. EVENT LINK

Thursday July 27 Live music by Emiliano Messiez and Rodolfo Zanetti. Emiliano was the pianist for the Broadway and London show “Forever Tango”, a show that has been seen by more than 8 million people around the world. He has also served as the music director and pianist for the successful shows “Impact” and “Tango Buenos Aires”, and he is the creator of “Barolo Tango,” a live tango show based in Argentina. Rodolfo, a native of Argentina, plays the bandoneon. Rodolfo directed Maria de Buenos Aires, the masterpiece of Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer in 2003. In the United States, Zanetti has performed as soloist at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Embassy of Argentina, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall. In 2017 he won the First Prize as a bandoneonist at the “Che Bandoneón International Competition” awarded by the Argentine Tango Society. In 2018 he played the bandoneon on the album “Vigor Tanguero” by Pedro Giraudo, which won the Latin Grammy for the best Tango Album. DimOn (aka Dmitri) will DJ between live music sets.
